Hand written transcription, dated February 1947, by Harry M. Painter, the author's grandson. Also includes letter of transmission from Painter to his cousin Clayton Lewis, 1947 July 25; correspondence between Addis G. Olsen and Lancaster Pollard of the Oregon Historical Society, 1949; and carbon copy of typed transcript of a letter written by Israel Mitchell and printed in the Western Star, Milwaukie, Oregon, 1850 Nov. 28.

Israel Mitchell, a grand-nephew of Daniel Boone, was born in Kentucky in 1796. He moved to Oregon Territory in 1847 as part of a wagon train. There Mitchell had a variety of jobs from civil engineer to judge, until he was elected to the legislature of the state. He died near Portland, Oregon in 1873.
